`When she gets up and grabs his arm'
`The voice over even though its not a scene it was vital'
` The flashback reestablished what was going on'

Target audience/audience feedback
The audience feed back was positive and we found that most people said `voice over was effective and helped to understand what was going on'.This we agreed with as the voice over is big part of understanding the narrative and why the characters have ended up there and the male characters change psychological.

From these videos we were able to get opinions from our target audience. This we can use to compare with our target audience research from our treatments e.g what are Target Audience we wanted and if they would like it and the research we did to find out what sort of thriller people enjoyed watching e.g the questionnaires on survey monkey.

When looking at the target audience we went for I feel we did reach out to our target audience as we were given positive comments from our target audience such as`Voice over was effective and helped people understand what was going on' that the narrative were clear the voice over worked well and the story was easy to understand. We included a couple as we thought people would be able to relate and enjoy watching a relationship fall apart as it is interesting to see were the relationship went wrong.
The elements we were worried about getting across to the audience were the voice over and narrative however from the audience feedback they though it was easily relatable the narrative was clear and could tell what was going on.They also picked out how the voice over was a key part in understanding the character and how he felt about there relationship.

Overall we were given good feedback from the audience and we were successful in making our opening effective in our use of camera angles such as close ups of the characters faces this creates suspense and to show emotion. We used voice over to narrate to the audience and create questions Making the audience want to find out what is going to or has happened to those characters. and contrasting the characters relationship. The improvements we were given also helped us to understand how we would do things differently and maybe changing shots, lighting etc.

We appealed to our target audience as wide range of ages were able to view our opening and give us different views on what could of been improved, as well as having positive aspects which were widely recognised by everyone who viewed it. The audience appeal was important for all stages of planning our narrative and characters. We wanted our characters to be able to relate to the audience e.g using two students.Overall our target audience was important in the choices we made e.g the narrative, plot, location and actors. We wanted to be sure that the story and characters we choose would appeal to our target audience as well as including conventions of a thriller such as red Herring which was a vital element of our opening sequence.

Part 1 and 2

Part 1-The brief

We were asked to make an opening of a thriller. It had a time limit of two minutes long and had to include typical thriller conventions. We came up with the title Open Verdict. We first researched in the titles and what sort of titles we thought would fit in well with our narrative.

The title open verdict fits in very well with the story and the all the shots being set in just the one bedroom like a crime scene.Open verdict gives and indication of the narrative. Our thriller is based on a Romeo and Juliet love story. Both characters were madly in love and happy together at one point in there life however everything changed which left them in a state of death. The character Mark who rings the phone has a big part in why they are left like this.

The narrative has a twist at the end as the female character is thought to be dead throughout however wakes up at the end This creates suspense and tension of the audience as well as unexpectedness. We didn’t want a title to be obvious about a relationship e.g sometimes referring to love or an end. Our opening thriller we came up with ideas of what the narrative would be about e.g what kind of story a stalker, romance, horror and what kind of sub genre would fit well and if anyone was doing the same. both we choice to go with our final idea. http://sgsasmediacw.blogspot.com/2010/02/glogster-ideas-for-opening.html,.oNCE

After we decided with our narrative we wrote it up as a treatment..http://sgsasmediacw.blogspot.com/2010/02/treatment-guide.html The sub genre we choose was romance/ psychological thriller. We wanted to incorporate romance and psychological together as we thought it would work well in showing a contrast. The voice over made it clear how the characters relationships changed and blending the two together showing a different kind of thriller. We

Part 2 –Audience for product

We researched who we wanted for our target audience by doing a questionnaire on survey monkey to find out about thrillers what sort of thrillers people liked, sub genres, there lifestyle and Hobbies. After we gathered the results we reed them through thoroughly and from this decided who our target audience would be and what kind of ages and people we would be focusing on.

The target audience we were aiming at were of the ages between 18-35 as the themes are for a more mature audience. We picked the age group of 13-35 as the themes would appeal more to a older audience and watching changes in a couples relationship. An older audience is more likely to pick up the psychological themes of the characters and asking questions into how they got to that stage. We wanted to aim it at both men and women as they can both relate to he narrative. We also wanted to aim it at both middle and working class people as well as people who are interested in such hobbies as drama, film clubs and enjoy the thriller genre. The questionnaires that we used for research helped us a lot in finding out what kind of people were interested in the thriller genre of films and the kind of thrillers they have seen as it was vital for us to know what kind of thriller we would focus e.g the sub genre.

The idea of Film Noir came from the way we decided to shoot it e.g in one room. This has been similar camera techniques to film Noir style and we thought it would be original and different from the other groups. We thought the audience would find this different and appealing as it doesn't fit with typical interpretations of thrillers e.g blood, violence, fast paced camera work and editing.

From the survey we did we most of our target audience were students. In our film we used students so that the audience can relate to the characters. We found that most of our target audience had seen the dark night .There is a love story embedded within this which we used as part of our plot. From the questions e asked we found that our target audience liked the mystery creative within the narrative of the thriller. Therefore in my filming we used mystery by using dark lighting, extreme closeup ups and still shots. Overall the survey helped us to focus on a particular plot and took into account what our target audience liked and disliked about thriller and how we could created a thriller which appeal to our target audience.

Sound ideas for our thriller

Sound Ideas

We have access to music software called garage band which will allow us to make sounds and create our own music to put over our thriller. The music and sound effects are the most important aspects of the thriller as this will mold it all together and create tension and suspense for the audience.

These are the kind of sounds and music we would like for our thriller

  • Tense, slow music to set the scene and atmosphere.

  • Sound of strings to get big loud sounds which will have an impact on the audience.

  • Happy, romantic music for the flashback to create a contrast between the different scenes and characters state.

  • Sound effects of rain and lightning to create the feeling of a dark and miserable time and showing pathetic fallacy as the characters are in the same state of mind.

  • The voice over will also be a very important aspect of sound as it will indicate to the Audience what is happening and help to guide the audience into their lives. The dialogue will represent what has happened between them over time.

Overall all the sound we make will have a dramatic effect on how good our thriller is.If we don't get the sound right it wont have much of an effect on the auidience and the narrative of it.

blog reflection-Week 11

General Research

We looked at numerous openings to thrillers and horrors to see what the music, camera, lighting and general narrative and plot were based on we looked at the openings of David Gayle, taxi driver, the orphan, , double indemnity. We focused a lot on this as it fit in with our film Noir base and voice over.
The things we wanted to include in our thrillers were:
  • A Voice over in the style of film noir which had a good script and was powerful enough to engage the audience into the lives of the characters.
  • Dark lighting in keeping with the film noir style.
  • Music and soudn effects that work well and in the style of film noir.

From the orphan opening we looked at how the music played a big part in engaging the audience and making hem feel tense and anxious. The first sounds we hear are soft music of piano showing a happy start of her being adopted this makes it easy for the music to change into something sinister reflecting how her character changes. The sounds that are used quite frequently during the opening were sounds of the wind and swinging of the swings. These types of sounds make it spooky and tense causing the audience to feel on edge not knowing what to expect. The music fits in well with the story and uses techniques of going from very quiet to loud to build up the tension and show that something is about to happen.

From the taxi driver we focused on how the voice over creates and sets the mood.It adds to the narrative and gives the audience an in site into the character and what to expect.
The voice over is clear and direct and just what the audience needs to know about his character e.g `the taxi driver is looking for a target' this makes the audience uneasy about what he is planning for his next victim. It also shows us a different side to the character and how he has become like this e.g The only moment in his life that will mean anything showing his only personal life hasn't satisfied him enough and now its payback. The voice over is important and must make sure it is done prisisely and fits with particular scenes.Overall the voice over gave us ideas as to the kind of dialogue we would use and how well it would fit into our narrative.

From the Life of David Gayle we looked at how the editing and camera work added to the creating the feelings of tension and suspense for the audience. It uses a lot of fades ans slow pace of cuts. This is to create tension fro the adience and not letting them know to much already. The voice over also gives the audience a second opinion on what has happened and how the characters are being portrayed. The use of angles vary showing a lot of high and low angles showing people of little and high importance.David Gayle is used in a lot of dark lighting in prison and bright lighting when it is flash backing on his life showing a contrast. We have used this technique in our thriller as well to show to different places in our characters life.

we looked at double indemnity as it is a film Noir style thriller including voice over.We looked at how the voice over works well with the narrative and characters also how the voice over was used and what kind of dialogue was used to follow the narrative and the characters. We used this style of voice over, the old Hollywood style this creates a story for the audience to follow and engage in.The style of lighting we used to keep with the film Noir era.We used this type of style as it was different and none of the other groups used this kind of style. This thriller gave us a lot of ideas for the voice over and what sort of narrative it was going to be based on.

Overall All these openings gave us ideas as to what type of voice over we wonted, the sounds and music we would like to use and the kind of shots and angles that will work well.

Pre production-Film noir Research

Film Noir

We looked at the film noir genre of thriller and found it interesting to take on this and integrate it into our opening thriller. It is completely different to thrillers nowadays unless they are specifically filmed in the style as film noir e.g the lighting, editing, music and camera.

Film noir started in the early 1940s-50s.It was famous for film which included stylish Hollywood crime dramas emphasizing on cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. It is recognised because of its Film noir of its a low-key black-and-white visual style. Its history dates back to crime fiction that came and was influenced by the United States during the Depression.

The sub genre of the thriller is Criminal. It usually involves a murder, this is an element of almost all film noir. The themes that arise are some like greed, jealousy, deception .The characters you would typically find in a film noir are a private eye, a police detective (sometimes acting alone), or a concerned Friend of victim.is this gives them a basic plot.

The protagonists are usually involved with something dangerous or bad e.g cons or adulterous affairs. The plot adds False suspicions and accusations of the crime that taken place showing the audience betrayals and double-crosses. The protagonists are usually women as affairs are included in the plot in quieter allot of film noir. Most are based on the male being the lying cheat and the women taking revenge for what they have done.

The film noir interested us to use this style as our plot is similar to the typical stories. We know that no-one else will try and film it like this and will make it a unique selling point.Having the voice over will make it more interesting for the audience as they are getting one view of the death from seeing it and another from hearing about it.

we looked at some of the famous film noir films which has helped us see how the lighting camera editing and mise-en-scene works well with the plot.

We looked at this example of film noir and specifically focused on the voice over. He is looking back on a event that has happened saying the date where he was and how he felt. Already we can see the lighting is set low key black and white style which gives an effect if a dark mysterious story,It has already identified one character in the first shot making the audience ask questions like who is he what happened to him what is he recollecting.

This was an interesting one as even the trailer stating the actors and what awards he had one was done in a film noir voice over style already engaging the audience into who he is, what will he do to his victims etc.

Pre production-Evalaution of the opening of inside Man

Opening Sequences
Inside Man

For this task i am analysing 'Inside Man'. This is a Crime-Thriller which is directed by Spike Lee.

At the beginning of the opening sequence we establish the production companies: Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment. This is done with music, right from the beginning. Its Bollywood music with the sound title 'Chaiya Chaiya'. The use of this sound is unusual for an american crime thriller, but it is used to establish indirectly to the audience that there is a mystery throughout the movie. This is done by the lyrics of the song referring to 'My Shadow' which in terms of this movie and the thriller genre, is suitable due to its mystery.

It then continues to a medium close up of a character named Dalton Rusel. This whole scene is a Flash-forward but the audience do not know it at the time. Its used successfully as the audience don't know it till the end. The Codes for this to be executed are normal, nothing to convey that the audience are watching a flash-forward because it is set like that in the narrative to build up for the twist at the end. This is establishing that the narrative is non-linear due to the clip at the beginning. This clip is central throughout the movie, it shows this clip, then repeats it when it reaches that stage in the narrative, and then continues in a linear sequence of events.

The Dialogue in this clip is crucial in creating a mysterious atmosphere for the audience, making them ask questions, whilst giving them clues/foreshadowing what is to come. It begins with; "My name is Dalton Russel, pay strict attention to what i say because i choose my words carefully and i never repeat myself". This is a formal introduction to the character, without giving away much about him, we can tell he is a strict and imperative person. He then continues with more dialogue to further the narrative, but to also create more questions for the audience. "I have told you my name, thats the who. The where can most ruddily be described as a prison cell. But there is a vast difference in being stuck in a tiny cell and being in prison". The point where he begins to speak about the vast difference between the two, there is a cut to Don in the small area which is described as a prison cell, which is smaller than an actual prison cell. This the cuts to him reading a book, writing and then doing push ups. This dialogue is mainly used to create a mystery in the audiences mind, but also give them set questions to focus on throughout the film, so that they can get ready for the twist at the end. It creates the question of why would you be in a location which is described as a prison cell, if it isn't a prison cell? This means that he has strong reasons of why he is in the location which at the moment in the film, can only be described as a prison cell.

This then goes back to the medium close up of the characters face and he continues his dialogue to say; "the what is easy, recently i planned and set a motion of events to execute the perfect bank robbery. Thats also the when. As for the why, beyond the obvious financial motivation, it is exceeding simple, because i can. Which leaves us with only the how. And therein as the bard would tell us, lies the rub". This piece of dialogue gives us answered questions throughout. It also shows us that the character is over-confident. To end this scene, the dialogue gives us the question of how. Which means to the audience, that the how will be explained throughout the rest of the film. This short scene is used effectively to draw the audience into the film which begins with questions, and works on the curiosity of its audiences and makes them want to know the answers, therefore they will continue to watch the film. From the point of dialogue; "because i can", the background begins to become visible from its initial black to show the walls in which he is confined in, and from that, it zooms in the background whilst keeping the character in the same position, which was used to show the walls of confinement of the character becoming smaller and smaller. This scene ends and fades into opening credit with a very long shot of the van which goes towards the bank which is going to be robbed. Music continuing from the track 'Chaiya Chaiya'.

This was a upbeat track which is unconventional for an opening sequence of a thriller, but established the morning of the day in which this sequence of event which has been explained takes place.

The opening credits have an interesting typography which represents the film well.

These two examples of the typography used in 'Inside Man' symbolise that the movie has a focus of time. This is shown by the title being set out like a watch. This is telling the audience a theme of the film is time, along with crime through the use of dialogue about the bank robbery.

This opening sequence is overall a very successful opening sequence in terms of creating the mystery for the rest of the movie, and anticipation to find answers. It also does well to set out questions for the audience, identifies themes of the film such as crime, and uses cinematography and typography to convey certain aspects of the film

Pre production- Evaluation of the opening of shining

The Shining

What type of thriller is it?
The shining is a psychological thriller as it deals with the change of attitudes and mind turning evil. It includes allot of violence and distress.
Outline of the story:
A Family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter holidays. This is an evil and spiritual presences influence the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific things from the past and future.
Opening:
It starts of with a deep sounding music showing us the woodland mountain areas, lakes and roads. The credits were slow paced and had a neutral colour making the audience feel uneasy and unsure. It impacts the audience well as the music causes us to be anxious, scared and apprehensive as to what is going to happen. it follows a car driving through the area which would e the family. It makes the audience wonder what is so evil in this area? What is going to happen to them on there trip? Who lives there? Being able to question it makes it appeal more to the audience as they want to carry on watching out to find out the next bit. Cuts were made to show each area of the mountains making us wonder what significance it has to the story and characters.
Thriller conventions used were?
Dramatic irony is used thought the film as we know when Johnny is going to latch to his next victim. Foreshadowing is an important one used as well as the music makes us know when something may happen e.g. build up of the music becoming louder or quieter or no music at all. Flash forwards were used to show the little boys state of mind thinking into the future and having bad thoughts. There is a twist as you don’t expect Johnny to fall down the stairs in the scene with his victim; you always associate the antagonist to have the control and upper hand over the victim’s actions.
Codes used to add to conventions were?
The Camera used hand held, long shots and close ups. The hand held created a realistic account of the victims feeling and panic when being faced with Johnny e.g. when Johnny is walking towards her up the stairs the cameras angles it low to show it from her perspective as well angle ling it high for his. Close ups of his coming towards them. The most famous scene shows how simple editing can have the biggest effect on the audience appeal for examples cuts from his and her reactions makes the audience feel suspense and scared for the victim. The audience has an insight into Johnny character already by the close-ups of his face. The use of dialogue and setting helped to make it more thrilling for the audience e.g. him putting him self as the bad wolf from a fairytale. The editing had a lot of Long takes sop the audience wouldn’t expect something out of nowhere to happen, making it more interesting. The setting made it realistic and contrasting the situation with an ordinary setting which the audience feel comfortable and aware of in there own lives. The music helped to create constant tension and suspense throughout by increasing the speed and level of volume and tone for the biggest impact on audience’s reaction.
Does it fit into typical thriller conventions?
In my opinion I feel it has all the conventions of a thriller and portrays this well through the codes to create the feeling of panic and horror for the Protagonist and a sense of cat and mouse for the Antagonist.

Blog reflection-Week 2

Pre production-One hour Photo Notes

One hour Photo Notes

Pre production-Evalution of the opening of david gayle

The Life of David Gale

What thriller genre is it?
It is a political thriller dealing with the controversial topic of the death sentence.
Brief outline of the story:
A man (David Gale) against capital punishment finds himself accused of the murdering of a fellow activist and is sent on death row.He then explains his story to a reported who then follows his life up until the time of his trial. The film is from his perspective and how events that he was accused for are reenacted showing the real truth of his innocence.
The opening
It opens the credits small lettering and white coloured causing tension and suspense. The use of no sound at the beginning works well to create an atmosphere for the audience. There is no music to start with but the sound of the wind in a remote desert area. The long shot creates suspense and that someone is watching the car. This makes the audience feel uneasy and curious as to where it is and what tone to expect for the rest of the film. The audience are made to ask questions when the women gets out of the car and starts to run e.g why is she running? what is she running from?who is she in the plot and were does she fit into the story. The music starts to build as she starts to run portraying she is panicked and desperate to get somewhere. The use of a pan from her feet to her head slowly lets the audience see her identity for the first time as before it was hidden by the the dark lighting.Cuts were used to the present to let us see who the women really is and how her character plays an important part in the narrative.
Clues given in the opening
The music sets the mood and creates tension for the audience so we have a hunch of what type of story it may be.
Main thriller conventions used were
Red herring were used to show the wrong lead dusty showing his relationship with Constance (murdered character) and how they made us think he was responsibly for her death. It challenges the audience to make there own perceptions of the character and who they think was responsible. flash forwards were used throughout the film as he was telling the reported events from the past but still keeping the with the present,to show David Gale re telling the events leading up to the trial. An example were this is used is when it goes back to when the allegations started of.He was a professor and slept with his student who accused him of rape, flashbacks were used to create suspense.Dramatic irony was also used to show this and the audience knowing that it wasn't rape and she consented to it.Pathetic fallacy was used to create a dark atmosphere e.g when they are driving through the town of Huntsville it is dark and makes us feel uneasy going into the unknown place for the audience and characters. It sets the scene of the murder story.
Examples of codes that represented these conventions
The camera shots and angles were used to create a disjointed story. The first scene used long shots hiding her identity and not knowing who or why she was their. close ups were used to show us her character. The editing used longer takes and quick cuts between each of the characters. This was to see give us and in site into each of the characters reactions towards the murder and how they perceive the evidence e.g the two reporters. The music helped to create tension and a feeling of uneasiness.the scene that portrays this is when bitsie is waiting outside of the public toilet and the man in the car is watching her , this makes us feel anxious as both the audience and the character don't know who he is or why he is watching her.
Does it Have typical thriller conventions?
In my opinion I feel it has typical thriller conventions included in the film which create the atmosphere of fear, tension and suspense. The codes represents them well through the camera editing and music and use this to impact on the audience.

Pre production-Evaluation of past work

Pre production- Evaluation of Phone booth

Antagonist
The phone character we don't know his appearance and identity is keeped a secret till the end.
Character is sarcastic, misleading dry sense of humour.Knows ever detail of Stu's life and his lies. From what he says we can tell he doesn't like liers and that his motivation is good for all.Wants people to be truthful however hard it may be for them in their lives. His character misleads Stu by changes his mind about what he could do e.g him being freed. His character is taken as seriously at the start but after the shooting we can tell he is serious.

Protagonist
This character(Stu) a publicist He comes across cocky and arrogant. no respect for people around him and treats people badly taking whats he can from them. However he changes because of the Antagonist character finds his weakness and then Stu starts become guilty and the antagonist has a power over him He changes his attitude when he is faced with his own death. his character is meant to be a victim put it has portrayed him as the bad guy because of his lies and his behaviour

Thriller conventions: setting/narrative/mise-en-scene/key themes
Technology used well and setting the mood of the thriller.
Reaction shots and being able to see more than one reaction shot using new technology e.g seeing Stu in the phone booth and his wife picking up the call in the corner of the shot.
the framing was rough to represents his hectic lifestyle;e and new york area always being packed and busy with people going every were.
the editing was edited in this way to show perspectives of the different character towards the situation. It let the audience see what each character was doing and thinking. The editing was close ins type to make us feel that Stu feels in closed and cant escaped his lies. The music used was to create suspense ands tension. The music changed after the shooting to very quiet and subdued so the audience would know what would happen next.

The opening of the film:
Starts of music gospel clouds emerging then a satellite telephone system straight to mobile conversation. The music changes to the gospel music emerging into street music fitting into the shot of new york city. There's fast shots and cuts at the start to represented the character and new york.

Targets

What i want to achieve:
  • My targets for this coursework will be to manage my time wisely spending equal amounts of times on each section of the coursework.

  • Make sure the thriller will impact the audience with the use of new technology, camera shots and the plot.

  • All my work is completed to a good standard and deadlines.

  • I want to improve my use of camera and editing skills so i will gradually become comfortable and confident with using it to get the thriller to a good standard.

Preliminary Exercise

The feedback I was given from my group

Digital technology-

It had a variety of shots, good use of angles and shot types such as match in action, over shoulder and close ups. Could of been improved by adding point of view shots to make the characters more realistic for the consumers perspective.

Creativilty(Storyline) It was good storyline simple but effeciive could tell it was set to the storyboard. Could of had dialogue between the two characters at the end of the film.

Post production- Could tell that i stuck to the storyboard god use of time and planning. Improve on editing maybe considering to use music for some of the scenes building up the tension and showing the relationship between characters.

Improvements

  • Improve on editing cut some of the longest scenes
  • add music to set the tone of the characters
  • Use more variety of shots and angles
  • Include more dialogue between the characters.

My target for my next project will be to include and improve on my editing techniques .I would also like to be able to use more camera angles and shots without hesitation and use panning and zoom to create a different tone to a scene.
