Pre production-Film noir Research

Film Noir

We looked at the film noir genre of thriller and found it interesting to take on this and integrate it into our opening thriller. It is completely different to thrillers nowadays unless they are specifically filmed in the style as film noir e.g the lighting, editing, music and camera.

Film noir started in the early 1940s-50s.It was famous for film which included stylish Hollywood crime dramas emphasizing on cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. It is recognised because of its Film noir of its a low-key black-and-white visual style. Its history dates back to crime fiction that came and was influenced by the United States during the Depression.

The sub genre of the thriller is Criminal. It usually involves a murder, this is an element of almost all film noir. The themes that arise are some like greed, jealousy, deception .The characters you would typically find in a film noir are a private eye, a police detective (sometimes acting alone), or a concerned Friend of victim.is this gives them a basic plot.

The protagonists are usually involved with something dangerous or bad e.g cons or adulterous affairs. The plot adds False suspicions and accusations of the crime that taken place showing the audience betrayals and double-crosses. The protagonists are usually women as affairs are included in the plot in quieter allot of film noir. Most are based on the male being the lying cheat and the women taking revenge for what they have done.

The film noir interested us to use this style as our plot is similar to the typical stories. We know that no-one else will try and film it like this and will make it a unique selling point.Having the voice over will make it more interesting for the audience as they are getting one view of the death from seeing it and another from hearing about it.

we looked at some of the famous film noir films which has helped us see how the lighting camera editing and mise-en-scene works well with the plot.

We looked at this example of film noir and specifically focused on the voice over. He is looking back on a event that has happened saying the date where he was and how he felt. Already we can see the lighting is set low key black and white style which gives an effect if a dark mysterious story,It has already identified one character in the first shot making the audience ask questions like who is he what happened to him what is he recollecting.

This was an interesting one as even the trailer stating the actors and what awards he had one was done in a film noir voice over style already engaging the audience into who he is, what will he do to his victims etc.
